YouTube Shorts dimensions: size, aspect ratio, and crop checks

TL;DR

Use 1080 × 1920 pixels, a 9:16 vertical canvas, as a practical starting point for YouTube Shorts and TikTok. It is not the only qualifying Shorts format: YouTube accepts qualifying square or vertical videos up to three minutes. Check framing in the actual mobile player.

Start with a 1080 × 1920 canvas for a full-height vertical Short. Then check how the source footage fits: a wide clip can sit inside that canvas with large empty areas above and below it.

Resizing the canvas will not move the subject or captions for you. Inspect both before exporting.

This guide separates the platform's qualifying formats from practical production recommendations. YouTube's Shorts format guidance was checked September 12, 2026.

Choose a canvas for the finished video

Common canvas choices, written width × height
CanvasAspect ratioPractical use
1080 × 19209:16A practical vertical production default
720 × 12809:16A smaller vertical export when appropriate
2160 × 38409:16Higher-resolution source workflow with larger files
1080 × 10801:1Square format; may qualify as a Short
1920 × 108016:9Horizontal canvas; prepare a different composition for Shorts

These are common canvas choices, not mandatory upload resolutions. Check the exported file: a preset named “Shorts” can still contain the wrong settings.

If your source is small, exporting it at a larger size does not restore missing detail. Inspect text and edges at the size viewers will see.

To-scale outlines of 720 by 1280 and 1080 by 1920 canvases; both have a 9:16 aspect ratio.
Both rectangles have the same 9:16 proportions. The larger has 1.5 times as many pixels along each side; the illustration compares geometry, not image quality.

Aspect ratio and resolution answer different questions

Aspect ratio describes the shape. Resolution describes the number of pixels. Both 720 × 1280 and 1080 × 1920 simplify to the same 9:16 shape.

That is why a resolution change can preserve the composition, while changing from horizontal to vertical can cut away important content. Do not treat those operations as the same export adjustment.

Four separate export decisions for a YouTube Short. Correct dimensions do not guarantee correct framing or readable text.

EncodingHow the file is storedPlayback and processing

For file-format questions, consult YouTube's recommended encoding settings. Treat encoding recommendations separately from your visual layout.

Recompose horizontal footage instead of stretching it

Imagine a horizontal screen recording with a control panel on the left and its result on the right. A centered vertical crop may show neither clearly. Stretching the entire frame makes text and objects distorted.

Choose one of three editorial approaches: show the relevant area in sequence, rebuild the explanation as a vertical diagram, or keep a wider inset when the full relationship must remain visible.

  • Sequential crop: show the control first, then the result, with narration connecting them.
  • Vertical reconstruction: recreate the essential relationship with accurate labels and source notes.
  • Inset: preserve the full frame and accept that some details may need a separate close-up.

Choose based on the lesson. A moving crop is not useful if it hides the step a viewer needs to copy. The storyboard template helps assign a visual job before editing.

A centered 9:16 crop of a 16:9 source removes a control on the left and its result on the right.
Illustrative screen layout, with the center crop drawn to scale. Show each relevant area in sequence when one crop cannot preserve the explanation.

Keep essential text clear of player controls

Keep essential text away from the player controls and inspect the uploaded preview on a phone. Treat a safe-area template as a starting point; the visible controls can differ between devices and player states.

YouTube's mobile editor provides visual guides for areas where overlays may be hidden by player elements. Use those guides when available. See YouTube's editing guidance.

Place a caption and a demonstration label in different areas when both need to be read. A filename tutorial should not put a word-by-word caption directly over the filename.

For a practical caption workflow, use how to add and check captions. Typography that looks readable on a laptop can become dense on a phone.

Diagnose bars, blur, and missing subjects

Check the original file before changing upload settings. If the bars or distortion already appear locally, the platform cannot recover the intended composition from the filename.

Run one full export check

A narrow cardboard crop contains the start of a ball’s motion but excludes its final position in a wide scene.
A crop can fit the opening and lose the ending. This illustrative motion study shows two positions of the same ball; inspect the full movement before exporting.

Keep the project and accepted export together. If TikTok requires a different text position, make a platform version without losing the accepted YouTube file. Use the TikTok organic-player overlay check to inspect that version against its actual destination; ad safe-zone diagrams do not define a universal organic margin.

The Shorts upload guide covers the next step. ShortsFast's faceless Shorts workflow supports production for YouTube Shorts and TikTok; the same final-file review still applies.

Watch the moving parts through to the end. A crop that fits the opening frame can lose the subject three seconds later.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a YouTube Short be?

1080 × 1920 pixels at a 9:16 aspect ratio is a practical vertical production choice. It is not the only qualifying format. Check YouTube's current square-or-vertical classification and duration rules.

Can a square video be a Short?

Yes, qualifying square uploads can be categorized as Shorts under YouTube's current rules. A vertical composition may still suit a particular demonstration better.

Does exporting at 4K improve a low-resolution source?

A larger export cannot restore detail that was absent from the source. Check the original asset, text size, and final playback before increasing output resolution.

What is the exact safe area for captions?

Check the actual platform player and its visual guides. Device and interface differences make a universal pixel margin unreliable. Keep essential text away from controls and verify on a phone.
